1. Projector Throw Ratio
The projection ratio is the ratio of the projection distance to the length of the screen. For example, a projector with a projection ratio of 1.2:1 can project a 1m long image at a distance of 1.2m from the wall.

Tip: The projection distance refers to the distance of the projector light source from the projection wall, not the distance from the room wall to wall. When calculating the projection distance, you also need to allow space for the body size, wiring, heat dissipation, etc., which is generally minus 0.5 meters in length. Suppose the distance from your living room wall to wall is 3 meters, then in the case of front projection, your reference projection distance is only 2.5 meters.

For a projector, the smaller the throw ratio, the larger the image projected from the same projection distance.

Suppose you want to project a 100 inch image in your living room, at the current projection ratio of 1.2:1 for most smart projectors, 221.39*1.2+50=315.668cm, then the width of your living room needs to be above 3.2 meters to meet your needs.

If you now find that the width of your living room (wall to wall distance) is only 3 meters, then you only have two choices, project a smaller size screen; or choose a projector with a smaller throw ratio.

2. Brightness
After determining the size of the projection screen, let's look at the brightness. Why is brightness a lower priority than projection ratio? Because brightness needs to be talked about based on screen size to be meaningful.

For example,turn on your phone's flashlight and aim it at the wall. You will find that the farther the phone is from the wall, the larger the illuminated area, but also the lower the brightness. The same is true of the projector screen, the larger the size of the screen projected by the same projector, the less clear the picture is; similarly, as long as you can accept a small enough picture, the brightness of a few hundred dollars projector you will feel enough.

However, since you choose to use the projector, it is for the enjoyment of a large screen, the bigger the picture is naturally the better, so how much brightness is enough? The first thing to understand are three concepts: projector brightness, nominal brightness, and true brightness.

Projector brightness

Projection brightness is usually expressed in terms of luminous flux. However, there are two units used to express luminous flux, ISO lumens (international standard) and ANSI lumens (American standard).

ISO lumens are international standards, and the ISO 21118:2012 document specifies various standards for projectors, including standards for brightness testing, technical terminology, noise measurement, etc.
ANSI lumens belongs to the American standard, which only specifies the size of the measurement screen of "60 inches", ignoring the projection distance of different focal length projectors, ignoring the air loss, and certain projector manufacturers are looking for ways to increase the lumen measurement value when measuring, seriously misleading consumers.

The nominal brightness, also called the advertised brightness, it is the one you see in the promotional page for each projector.

⭐ How much brightness is enough

So how much real brightness is enough for a projector? Or what is the brightness that can make our eyes relax under different lighting conditions? This is something we can refer to the cinema.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) also specifies the brightness of theaters should be between 41-75nit (17±5fl).

The light from a projector needs to be reflected off the wall to reach the human eye, which is affected by the projection distance, wall reflectivity, and ambient light during this period. Each person's projector sees a different brightness in different rooms and on different walls, so it is expressed in lumens.

3. Resolution
The picture should be clear to ensure that you can see clearly. The first "clear" refers to the brightness, the second "clear" refers to the clarity of the picture, that is, the resolution.

The resolution is the number of pixels in the vertical and horizontal direction of the screen, and the higher the resolution, the clearer the picture, all other things being equal.

For LCD projectors, the core component that determines the resolution is the LCD (liquid crystal panel). For a DLP projector, the core component that determines its resolution is the DMD chip.

Whether it is an LCD panel or a DMD chip, the larger the component size, the greater the number of LCD units or micromirrors it carries, and then the greater the corresponding resolution.

As monolithic LCD technology is mainly used in projectors under a thousand dollars,, 3LCD technology is currently only Epson in use, DMD chip is most widely used, the following focus on the DMD chip.

⭐ Processor

The processor is equivalent to the brain of the smart projector. The processor of the projector on the market is mainly divided into two categories, one is Mstar, the other is Amlogic. two processors compared, in fact, in the processor performance difference is not much, but the advantage of Mstar is to market earlier, so the market share is higher.
